Are the cheap theatre tickets sold at those stands near Leicester Sq. genuine?

I have seen stands offering cheap theatre tickets for shows that evening near Leicster Square and other locations in London. Are these tickets genuine? Will they be bad seats? How cheap are they exactly? Would I be able to get them for a show like Billy Elliot? Please help, I’ve never even been to the theatre before and want to surprise a friend.
Oh and when is it best to go and buy them? Are they cheaper if you wait longer? Or do you have to go as early as possible before they sell out? What time?
