Hi everyone

I’m looking for some suggestions on where to go for a long weekend (fri - mon) in Feb.

Its my 30th, and my boyfriend wants to take me somewhere nice in Europe. We have had a look online at London theatre breaks, which look okay, but any suggestions or experiences would really help us choose somewhere. It will only be me and my other half.

Thanks in advance guys!

Kate

London is a very good place to come [I live there lol] there are hundreds of things to do and it is relatively cheap

Also France, Spain or Andorra are nice :)

Check out SpinCityTravel.com and go to Book Travel. Look under Great Travel Deals, Extras and Vacations. There are some really cool destinations for incredible prices.

When asking a question like “where is the best place” it is helpful to give some kind of indication of what you are looking for. So for example:

* Sun and Fun: Canary Islands is the only place in Europe that will definately be warm enough to swim. But if you go, by all means rent a car. The places where the hotels are are fun, but are very touristy

* Snow and Ski: I like Zermatt, Switzerland. It is very pretty, has the beautiful ski area, the Matterhorn, nearby. There are no cars allowed and it is a very elegant, though rather expensive resort area.

* Culture: Paris is great year round. Even when it is cold, you can spend your days in the Louvre or shopping along the Champs Elysee.

* Party Time: Can not do better than Amsterdam. There is a party happening all year round on Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein. The museums are great and when you tire of museums and partying, take a canal cruise

So, depending on the type of holiday you have in mind, there will certainly be an adventure for your 30th.

The best place to go is Kopaonik, Serbia, lots of skiing and winter fun…and not too expensive

Another great place is definitely Amsterdam, or Belgrade, Serbia
Good luck and I hope you have a good time on vacation!

Hi Kate, I can give you some advice on places I have travelled to but it does depend on whether you want warm or cold.

Riga, Latvia. A beautiful little place that should be lovely and cold and even snowy at that time of the year. The people there are wonderful and walking round the little cobbled streets and finding gorgeous restaurants to watch the snow from is great. It is also really cheap. I would recommend a trip to the SkyBar in the Raddison to see Riga laid out below.

Reykjavik, Iceland. It will again be pretty cold and there should be the chance of snow. It is incredibly cheap to get to (I’ve looked for Christmas and it’s approx £500 for two for flights and 5 nights) but not so cheap once you get there. The scenery is absolutely stunning and a visit to the Blue Lagoon, the outdoor thermally heated pool, is a must. We visited geysers and waterfalls and I fell in love with the place.

Lisbon, Portugal. The weather will be pretty much like ours, but it’s a beautiful city to go to and incredibly vibrant. There is a great shopping area around the Oceanario (which is also good fun).

Rome or Venice. Both have the most amazing history and the buildings are amazing. Venice is incredibly romantic when all the crowds aren’t there. Stay off Venice on an island like Murano and you won’t feel so hemmed it. Don’t eat around St Marks Square either as it’s so much more expensive. Wander off the beaten track in both places and you’ll find these amazing little hidden gems, Circus Maximus in Rome and Arsenale in Venice were really quiet but lovely. Also in Venice you can get the ferry to the Lido and go to the beach there. I adored both places and would definately visit again.

Paris - as another answer said it all, I can only add; amazing food, great shopping and my personal favourite the Sacre Cour a steep walk up lots of steps, but go inside and climb right to the top (a windy spiral staircase that would test even an olympian!) and the views are just as impressive as up the Eiffel Tower.

Madrid, Spain. One of my personal favs, the city is amazing and the shopping really is some of the best I have seen. The food was wonderful too, sitting in the town square and eating freshly cook paella was an experience. It has a rich heritage and the museums are fantastic. There’s loads to do and lots of parks and green spaces. The Spanish also know how to party so the nightlife is good fun.

Oslo, Norway. Another favourite. It is very small so I don’t come home covered in blisters and needing a rest (my hubbie walks EVERYWHERE so we don’t miss anything). Again that time of the year will be very cold and you should have a huge chance of snow (it’s snowing out there now). As it is so small you can find everything. We took a trip around the harbour fjords and it was just so pretty. The main area for food was called Akke Brigge and it’s a boardwalk along the harbour with fantastic views. There are some great museums like the Viking one and another for the Kon Tiki (really basic but just a laugh). It is expensive to eat out, but pretty much like going to London as well. I found the people really welcoming and they do like to be out socialising so most places were full in the evenings with great atmosphere.

Vienna, one of the most romantic places I have been. We were lucky to go in August so the weather was perfect. The buildings are beautiful and really old fashioned. There was loads to do and the food again was very good. We took a trip up to the hills and some wineries and in the evening went to some beer places where you get to do wine or beer tasting and have a meal, the atmosphere was so much fun. There are some mad buildings out there designed by an artist who I cannot remember but you won’t be able to miss them. The Town Hall (Rathouse in so many place - I wonder why it’s called that!) looks like a cathedral and when we were there they were showing an opera on a massive outdoor screen, there were hundreds of people there and loads of little makeshift bars and food stalls. We sat there eating fresh paella (again!) drinking wine and listening to the drifting strains of the opera, oh it was probably one of the most off the cuff, romantic things I have done abroad. Get a horse and cart ride around the city too.

Amsterdam. I have recently visited and we were really lucky again with the weather (August). It’s a can do anything kind of place with hundreds of great restaurants and bars. You don’t feel intimidated anywhere and it really is gorgeous, I couldn’t stop taking photo’s of the quirky houses. We visited Edam - which was really pretty and then some windmills. We also had loads of fun in their science museum which is the building shaped like a boat! Again just walk everywhere! One thing we didn’t get the chance to do was go on a personal canal cruise. Loads of people were offering trips in their boats, with wine and huge cushions, rather than sitting on a packed tourist boat. I wish we had done it cos it looked so fun.

Have a great time wherever you chose.

Easy, Easy, Easy

Barcelona is by far the best place for a break in February - give it a try - you will have an amazing time.

London is OK but cold and wet in February

Either go for a City Break; Palma, or Barcelona, or how about the Lake District? Check out;, this is a family run guest house, right overlooking the lake in Windermere, but also, within a short walk of the town itself…..we have been several times in February, the house is always cosy and warm…and friendly too!!
